Coober Pedy is a small town located between Adelaide and Alice Springs. It is known as the opal capital of the world because of the number of mines of this mineral found there (over 70 opal fields). It is also famous because most of the inhabitants live underground, especially in old rehabilitated mines, called dugouts. Now you can visit an authentic underground city since, in addition to residences, we can also visit shops, churches or museums.

The name of Coober Pedy derives from the aboriginal local term kupa-piti, which means Boys' waterhole.
